What is Dermaplanning?
Dermaplaning or epidermal leveling is a cosmetic treatment that is a popular exfoliation method not only to remove dead skin cells but also used to remove fine/ vellus hairs or “peach fuzz.”
How is it performed? We use a sterile medical grade scalpel to scrape the top layer of the skin. This method not only removes fine vellus hairs it also removes dead skin cells and therefore resurfacing the texture of the skin. The thought of a scalpel doesn’t sound very enticing! Trust me it isn’t scary as it looks. The blade should be at a 45 degree angle scraping gently onto the skin. It is very comfortable! I like the thoroughness of this treatment. It gets to all the areas where you may have congestion buildup and leaves the skin feeling clean.
What are the other benefits?
- Softens acne scars
- Revitalizes dull skin
- Improves dry skin
- Reduces congestion such as blackheads, whiteheads and milia
- smooths fine lines and wrinkles
- Safe for pregnant/ lactating women
- Makeup sits on better, perfect treatment prior to an event/special occasion
One of the most common questions asked is “will the hairs grow back coarser?” The answer is no. Just like shaving it only removes the tip of the hair not the root of the follicle. The hairs will grow back at the same rate and texture. It is an excellent treatment for sensitive skin conditions, or skin that is fine/thin. Not everyone can handle exfoliation methods such as AHA from peels or microdermabrasion, and this treatment is excellent for reactive skin types. It has no side effects and no downtime. Skin may feel slightly tingly or pink after but that is normal after any exfoliation, as it will increase maximum absorption of products. After the treatment skin will look brighter and radiant and noticeable results over the following days. SPF is important after any exfoliation treatment, as the barrier of the skin is more susceptible to UV exposure and damage.
How often should you get it done? Every 4 to 6 weeks is ideal.
If your skin is tolerable and you want to boost the treatment, why not add on a pomegranate peel? It is rich in antioxidants and botanicals whilst also containing Lactic acid and Salicylic acid to enhance product absorption and improve texture of the skin. Your
skin will thank you for it!
